Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Shavano Park Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Clopay-compatible cable and drum replacement in Shavano Park for $130-$250 installed, and we carry the common sizes on every truck. Most calls are completed same-day because the parts are already with us. You’ll usually notice this problem when the door hangs crooked, slams down on one side, or the cable has unspooled into a tangled nest above the header.

Call (830) 224-4217

Last Tuesday we were out on a call near Airy Mount Road where a homeowner had heard a rhythmic thump for three weeks before the left cable finally snapped. The door was a 1989 Clopay steel panel, original hardware. That’s the pattern we see in Shavano Park: older homes, original equipment, and cables that corrode slowly until they fail all at once.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay has used several drum designs across their product lines, and matching the right one matters. The Classic Series, Premium Series, and Coachman Collection each spec different drum diameters and cable lengths. You’ll find the model number on a sticker inside the door section or embossed on the hinge side of the bottom fixture.

Clopay’s OEM drums are marked with a part number starting with “012” or “014” depending on the lift type. Standard lift doors use a 4-inch diameter drum; high-lift or vertical-lift installations need a larger 5.5-inch drum with a deeper cable groove. We also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from DURA-LIFT and Prime-Line that meet the same torque specs at a lower price point. For most Shavano Park homes built between 1980 and 2005, the standard lift configuration is what you’ll have.

One compatibility gotcha: Clopay’s newer Intellicore insulated doors use a slightly wider drum hub that can bind if you install a generic replacement. We check this on every job.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door hangs crooked or one side drops faster. This means one cable has stretched, frayed, or slipped off its drum groove. The remaining cable carries uneven load, which warps the door and stresses the opener.
  • You hear a rhythmic thumping or grinding when the door moves. A cable that has jumped its drum groove will slap against the track or drum flange with each rotation. Ignore this sound and the cable will saw through itself against the drum edge.
  • The cable is visibly frayed, rusted, or has broken strands. Clopay cables are galvanized steel, but Shavano Park’s humidity swings and occasional hard freezes accelerate corrosion. Once you see three or more broken wires in a two-inch section, the cable is living on borrowed time.
  • The door slams closed or won’t stay open at the halfway point. A failed cable removes tension from one side of the spring system. The door becomes unbalanced, which overworks the opener and can bend the top section.
  • The cable has completely unspooled and sits in a tangled coil. This happens when the set screw on the drum loosens or the cable anchor at the bottom fixture pulls free. The drum spins freely while the cable drops, and the door is now held by a single cable and the spring tension alone.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Clopay cable and drum replacement in Shavano Park runs $130-$250 installed. The lower end covers a single cable swap on a standard lift door with accessible hardware. The upper end applies when both cables and drums need replacement, or when we need to rebalance the spring system after the failure.

Service Price Range
Single cable replacement $130-$180
Cable and drum pair (both sides) $180-$250
Spring rebalancing (if needed) Included in range above

We state the flat price before any work begins. That price includes the parts, labor, disposal of the old hardware, and a full test of door balance and opener force settings. Every job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the door doesn’t run right after we leave, we come back at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can inspect the cable for fraying, check whether the cable is seated in the drum grooves, and verify the door is unplugged before you touch anything. These checks cost nothing and tell you whether you’re looking at a minor adjustment or a full replacement.

Where DIY goes wrong is in the spring tension. The cables on a Clopay door are under constant load from the torsion spring above the header. Release a cable without first securing the spring, and the door can drop with enough force to damage the door or injure whoever is underneath it. We don’t recommend homeowners attempt cable replacement themselves.

Our trucks carry Clopay-compatible cables, drums, and bottom fixtures. Most Shavano Park jobs are finished in one visit. Call (830) 224-4217 and we’ll quote it flat before we head out.
