• The cable is visibly frayed, rusted, or has broken strands. Clopay cables are galvanized steel, but Shavano Park’s humidity swings and occasional hard freezes accelerate corrosion. Once you see three or more broken wires in a two-inch section, the cable is living on borrowed time.
• The door slams closed or won’t stay open at the halfway point. A failed cable removes tension from one side of the spring system. The door becomes unbalanced, which overworks the opener and can bend the top section.
• The cable has completely unspooled and sits in a tangled coil. This happens when the set screw on the drum loosens or the cable anchor at the bottom fixture pulls free. The drum spins freely while the cable drops, and the door is now held by a single cable and the spring tension alone.
