We’re the crew that shows up when your garage door won’t budge at 6 a.m. or when you’re staring at a broken spring and wondering if you can still get to work. Every one of us lives in the San Antonio area, and we’ve been working in Shavano Park long enough to know which houses sit on the hillier lots where doors wear unevenly and which neighborhoods were built before the 2012 wind-load code changed. What ties us together isn’t a handbook. It’s that nobody here wants to be the person who has to come back twice for the same problem.

Carl Dutton, Owner
I’ve been running Mainspring since 1984, back when Shavano Park was mostly ranch land and the occasional custom home. Started out of a single truck with a box of springs and the belief that if you told someone a price, that price should be the one on the invoice. Still believe it. These days I spend more time on the phone than under doors, but I still pull a call rotation and I still sign off on every 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. The name “Mainspring” isn’t decoration. The mainspring is the component that carries the full weight of your door every time it moves. Ignore it and everything else fails. That’s the lens I use for this business.
Mike R., Lead Technician
Mike’s been with us fourteen years and he’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Raynor openers. He’s the one we send when a customer has already had two other companies out and the door still reverses halfway up. Grew up in Leon Valley, so he knows how the limestone substrate in this part of Bexar County shifts in dry spells and what that does to door alignment. Keeps a coffee thermos that hasn’t been empty since 2019. His personal rule: if he’s on a job past 5 p.m., he calls the customer himself the next morning to make sure everything’s still running quiet.
Dolores V., Senior Installer
Dolores handles new door and opener installations across Shavano Park and up into the Hill Country. She’s completed the Clopay Master Authorized Dealer program and she’s our go-to for wind-load calculations on oversized custom doors, which come up more than you’d think in this zip code. Before she joined us in 2016, she spent eight years in commercial overhead door work, so she’s not fazed by a 18-foot opening or a request for insulated steel in a four-car garage. Off the clock, she restores vintage motorcycles and she’s been known to spot a misaligned track from the street before she even parks the truck.

James is the live voice that answers when you call (830) 224-4217 at 11 p.m. on a Sunday. He’s been with Mainspring six years and he knows which parts every truck carries, which technician is closest to Shavano Park at any given moment, and whether your grinding noise is more likely to be a worn roller or a failing gear assembly. He grew up in Castle Hills and he can tell you which Shavano Park subdivisions have HOA color restrictions that affect door replacement. He’s also the one who makes sure your appointment window is real, not aspirational. We will be there when we say.
Elena M., Apprentice Technician
Elena joined us in 2023 after completing her technical training at St. Philip’s College. She’s working toward full journeyman status under our K.E.Y.S. program, Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it. Right now she’s shadowing Mike on spring and cable replacements, which we don’t let anyone touch solo until they’ve seen at least a hundred under supervision. She’s already developed a specialty in troubleshooting smart-home opener integrations, which is where most of the Genie and LiftMaster product line is headed. Lives in Northwest San Antonio and spends weekends trail running at Friedrich Wilderness Park, so she’s used to showing up somewhere steep and figuring it out.
