Craftsman Weather Seal Replacement: The Shavano Park Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Craftsman-compatible weather seal replacement for most steel and aluminum door series, with typical installed pricing running $150-$300 depending on door width and seal type. Most Shavano Park homes we see have either a 16-foot or 18-foot double-car door, and we carry both the bulb-style and T-style retainers on the truck. Call us at (830) 224-4217 and we can usually get to you the same day you notice the problem.

Most owners in Shavano Park don’t think about their weather seal until they step into the garage after a hard rain and find water beading along the concrete floor, or until they notice the electric bill climbing because conditioned air is leaking out the bottom of the door. The rubber or vinyl seal along the bottom retainer takes a beating from Texas sun and the occasional freeze, and after seven to ten years it hardens, cracks, or pulls loose from the track.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Craftsman garage doors sold through Sears and later through Lowe’s came in several series, and the weather seal you need depends on which track system your door uses. The most common in Shavano Park are the 139-series steel doors from the early 2000s and the more recent 41A and 41C lines. Check the sticker on the inside top panel or the side of the door for a model number starting with those digits. If the sticker is gone, measure the width of the bottom retainer channel: the T-style measures about 5/16 inch across the top of the T, while the bulb-style uses a wider 1-inch channel that the bulb snaps into.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Craftsman. For most Shavano Park jobs we use a quality aftermarket seal that matches OEM specs at a better price point. The exception is when a door uses the older, discontinued single-channel retainer found on some pre-2005 models. In those cases we retrofit a compatible retainer and seal as a unit rather than hunting obsolete parts. Carl Dutton keeps a compatibility chart in every truck, and we’ve yet to meet a Craftsman door in this area we couldn’t match.

Signs Your Craftsman Weather Seal Replacement Is Failing

  • Water pooling inside after rain. The seal’s job is to create a flexible dam against the driveway slope. Once the rubber hardens or develops gaps, water follows the path of least resistance straight into your garage. In Shavano Park, where many driveways pitch toward the door, this shows up fast during spring storms.
  • Daylight visible under the closed door. A properly fitted seal compresses evenly across the full width. If you can see light from inside with the door down, the seal has either shrunk, torn, or the retainer has pulled away from the bottom of the door panel.
  • Insects and debris collecting near the threshold. The seal is also a pest barrier. When gaps open up, crickets, scorpions, and leaf litter find their way in. We’ve replaced seals in Shavano Park homes where the homeowner first noticed the problem because of an ant trail.
  • Increased noise when the door closes. A healthy seal cushions the door against the concrete. As it deteriorates, metal hits concrete with a sharper sound. Some owners mistake this for a track or opener problem when it’s just the seal gone flat.
  • Visible cracks, splitting, or a permanent flat spot. Texas UV exposure accelerates this. The seal that stays compressed against hot concrete all summer will develop a memory crease and lose its spring-back. Once you see cracking, the material is past saving.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Craftsman weather seal replacement in Shavano Park, our installed price typically falls between $150 and $300. A single 8-foot door on a standard T-style retainer runs toward the lower end. A 16-foot or 18-foot door with a bulb-style retainer, or one requiring retainer replacement due to corrosion or damage, runs higher. We state the flat price before any work begins, and that price includes the seal, any necessary retainer hardware, labor, and disposal of the old material.

What drives the range: door width, retainer type, and whether the existing retainer is still square and rust-free. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the work in writing. If the seal doesn’t sit right or you spot a gap we missed, we come back at no charge. No paperwork to file, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

A weather seal replacement is not a high-tension job like a spring, but it has its own gotchas. An owner can safely check the retainer type and measure the door width. What goes wrong in DIY is usually one of three things: buying the wrong seal profile for the retainer, installing it with the door down and trapping wrinkles, or discovering too late that the retainer screws have rusted through and the whole channel needs replacement.

We carry the common Craftsman profiles on the truck, and most jobs take under an hour. If you’d rather not spend a Saturday afternoon on your knees with a putty knife, call (830) 224-4217. We’ll quote it flat, do it right, and move on.
