Genie Cable & Drum Replacement: The Shavano Park Owner’s Guide

Which Genie Models This Applies To

Genie has used several drum designs across its product lines, and matching the right assembly matters. The older screw-drive models, particularly the Excelerator and IntelliG series from the early 2000s, used a smaller 4-inch diameter drum with a left-hand wind specification that differs from current production. Newer ReliaG, ChainLift, and BeltLift units moved to a standardized 5-inch drum with a different cable anchor point.

To identify what you need, check the model sticker on the power head, usually found on the side or back near the light lens. The part number prefix tells the story: IS, IC, or H series indicate the older drum style; 3022, 3024, 3053, or 3055 prefixes indicate the current design. If the sticker is worn off, measure the drum diameter and count the cable grooves, two grooves means a lighter-duty 1/2-horsepower unit, three grooves means 3/4-horsepower or greater.

We carry OEM Genie drums and cables where available, and we also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from DURA-LIFT and Prime-Line that meet the same tensile specs at a lower price point. • Cable has completely separated from the drum. Usually the end result of ignoring the earlier signs. The door is now unsupported on one side and dangerous to operate.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here. You can inspect the cable for fraying and check whether the drum set screw is loose with the door fully closed and disconnected from the opener. Use the emergency release handle to put the door in manual mode first. If you see rust, broken strands, or the cable has jumped the drum groove, stop there.

What you should not do: attempt to wind, unwind, or adjust the torsion springs to release cable tension. The springs above your Genie opener carry hundreds of pounds of stored energy.
