Genie Cable & Drum Replacement: The Shavano Park Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Genie-compatible cable and drum assemblies for most residential opener systems in Shavano Park, with typical installed pricing between $130 and $250. Most calls are completed same-day because our trucks carry the common drum sizes and cable lengths for Genie screw-drive, chain-drive, and belt-drive units. You’ll usually notice this problem when the door starts closing crooked, hangs at an angle, or one side lifts faster than the other.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

Genie has used several drum designs across its product lines, and matching the right assembly matters. The older screw-drive models, particularly the Excelerator and IntelliG series from the early 2000s, used a smaller 4-inch diameter drum with a left-hand wind specification that differs from current production. Newer ReliaG, ChainLift, and BeltLift units moved to a standardized 5-inch drum with a different cable anchor point.

To identify what you need, check the model sticker on the power head, usually found on the side or back near the light lens. The part number prefix tells the story: IS, IC, or H series indicate the older drum style; 3022, 3024, 3053, or 3055 prefixes indicate the current design. If the sticker is worn off, measure the drum diameter and count the cable grooves, two grooves means a lighter-duty 1/2-horsepower unit, three grooves means 3/4-horsepower or greater.

We carry OEM Genie drums and cables where available, and we also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from DURA-LIFT and Prime-Line that meet the same tensile specs at a lower price point. For most Shavano Park homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s, the aftermarket option holds up fine. The exception is the Excelerator line, where the drum’s unique cable exit angle really does require the OEM geometry to prevent premature wear.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • Door closes crooked or one side drops faster. The cable on the failing drum has slipped or frayed, creating unequal tension across the door. In Shavano Park’s limestone-heavy soil, foundation settling can accelerate this by putting the door frame slightly out of square.
  • Visible cable fraying or rust spots near the drum. The galvanized coating on Genie cables wears through at the drum contact point first. Once rust starts in our humid Texas springs, the cable loses strength fast.
  • Grinding or clicking from the opener head during travel. The drum is not rotating smoothly, often because the cable has bunched or crossed on the spool. This puts sideways load on the opener’s internal gears.
  • Door hangs open a few inches and will not close fully. The cable has stretched beyond its take-up capacity or the drum set screw has loosened. On Genie units, the set screw is a common failure point after ten years of thermal cycling.
  • Cable has completely separated from the drum. Usually the end result of ignoring the earlier signs. The door is now unsupported on one side and dangerous to operate.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Shavano Park
Cable & Drum Replacement (installed) $130 - $250
Cable-only replacement (drum reusable) $130 - $190
Drum-only replacement (cable reusable) $150 - $220
Both sides, full assembly $200 - $250

What drives the range: whether one side or both need work, whether the cable has damaged the drum grooves, and whether we need to reset door spring tension after the repair. We quote the full price before touching a tool, and that price does not change once we start. Parts, labor, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise are all included. If the door still does not track right after we leave, we come back at no charge. No paperwork to file, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here. You can inspect the cable for fraying and check whether the drum set screw is loose with the door fully closed and disconnected from the opener. Use the emergency release handle to put the door in manual mode first. If you see rust, broken strands, or the cable has jumped the drum groove, stop there.

What you should not do: attempt to wind, unwind, or adjust the torsion springs to release cable tension. The springs above your Genie opener carry hundreds of pounds of stored energy. A slipped wrench or misjudged winding bar causes serious injury every year in Bexar County. Cable replacement requires controlled spring release, precise drum alignment, and correct cable tension balancing. We carry the winding bars, the gauges, and the experience to do it without drama. Carl Dutton still writes every quote by hand in the truck before reading it aloud, and we only start work after you agree to the flat number.
