Genie Opener Logic Board Repair: The Shavano Park Owner’s Guide

Genie opener logic board repair in Shavano Park typically runs $120-$320 installed, and we stock the most common boards for same-day replacement. Most Genie logic board swaps take under 90 minutes once we’re on site. You’ll know the board is suspect when your opener starts ignoring remotes, reversing for no reason, or flashing its diagnostic LEDs in patterns that don’t match the owner’s manual.

Call (830) 224-4217

Last Tuesday we were out on a call near Airy Mount Road. The homeowner’s Genie ChainLift 1200 had been working fine Tuesday morning, dead by lunch. Wall button got a faint orange glow, nothing else. That’s the board. We had the matching Intellicode board on the truck, swapped it, reprogrammed the remotes, and the door was running before the coffee got cold. Carl Dutton wrote the quote by hand in the driveway: $245, parts and labor, 90-Day Done Right Promise printed right there. No surprises on the bill.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

Genie has used three main logic board families over the past two decades, and getting the match wrong means a return trip. Here’s how to tell what you’re holding.

Intellicode 1 and 2 boards (1995-2011): Found in older ChainLift, ScrewDrive, and DirectLift series. The board label sits under the light cover, usually marked with a 6- or 7-digit part number starting with 201, 202, or 203. These boards are 5.5 by 3.25 inches, with a 12-pin terminal block on the lower edge. If your opener has a red “Learn” button, you’re in this generation.

Intellicode 3 and current boards (2012-present): Used in ChainLift, SilentMax, and Aladdin Connect-ready models. The board is smaller, 4.75 by 2.875 inches, with a 16-pin block and a blue or purple Learn button. These carry part numbers in the 37000 or 39000 series. The Aladdin Connect module piggybacks on a separate header, so a failed main board can kill your app connectivity even when the wall button still works.

The OEM vs. aftermarket question: We carry both. OEM Genie boards come in factory packaging with full warranty coverage. Our aftermarket equivalents, built to the same spec, run 15-20% less and carry the same 90-Day Done Right Promise. For a 2008 ScrewDrive on its last legs, the aftermarket board is often the smarter spend. For a 2022 SilentMax still under factory warranty, OEM protects that coverage. We stock both on every truck.

One Shavano Park gotcha: the 1022 and 1024 ChainLift models shipped with two different board revisions depending on whether they were built for 315 MHz or 390 MHz remotes. The boards are not interchangeable. We check the frequency sticker on the motor head before we pull anything.

Signs Your Genie Opener Logic Board Repair Is Failing

  • The opener responds to the wall button but ignores every remote. This usually means the radio receiver circuit on the board is failing. The hardwired wall button bypasses the RF stage, so it keeps working while remotes go dead. We see this most often after power surges in Shavano Park’s older neighborhoods, where overhead lines still carry lightning risk.
  • The door reverses immediately after touching the floor, or reverses for no obstacle. The logic board’s travel-limit memory has corrupted. On Genie units, this is stored in non-volatile memory on the board itself, not in a separate limit switch. A reset sometimes buys a week; replacement fixes it.
  • Diagnostic LEDs flash a pattern that doesn’t match any code in the manual. The microcontroller on the board is throwing errors from its own self-test, not from a sensor. Common patterns: two quick red flashes, pause, repeat, or solid red with no response to Learn button presses.
  • The opener runs for 3-5 seconds then stops, with the motor never engaging the door. The relay that switches power to the motor driver has burned contacts. You’ll hear the motor hum or the chain twitch, then nothing. This relay is soldered to the board, not replaceable separately.
  • Intermittent operation that gets worse on hot afternoons. Heat-stressed capacitors on the board are drifting out of spec. Shavano Park’s 100-degree August days push garage temperatures to 110-plus, and that’s where marginal boards fail first. The capacitor bulges or leaks electrolyte, visible if you pop the cover.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Shavano Park
Genie Opener Logic Board Repair / Replacement $120-$320
Opener Installation (if board failure reveals deeper issues) $250-$550
$50 Off Any Repair Over $250 Applied automatically

The $120-$320 range covers most Genie logic board replacements we do in Shavano Park. A straightforward swap on a common model, Intellicode 2 or 3, lands near the middle. The low end applies when we’re already on site for another repair and the board change adds minimal labor. The high end covers older ScrewDrive units where the board is buried under mechanical hardware, or where we need to program multiple remotes and a wireless keypad from scratch.

Every quote includes the board, labor, travel, remote reprogramming, and safety-reverse testing. We state the flat price before any work begins. If we open the cover and find the motor itself is seized, not the board, we’ll stop and explain. No charge for the diagnosis if you decline the repair. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers everything in writing.

Seniors and veterans receive our standing 5% discount. If you have a written estimate from another shop, we’ll beat it or give you a free second opinion.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s safe checking, and then there’s false economy.

What you can do: unplug the opener for 60 seconds to clear a soft lockup. Check that the door moves freely by hand, disconnected from the opener, so you know the problem isn’t mechanical. Look at the board through the light cover for obvious capacitor bulges or scorch marks. These steps cost nothing and help us diagnose faster when you call.

Where DIY goes wrong: the logic board carries line voltage even when the opener is “off” at the wall switch. Capacitors on the board hold a charge that can deliver a serious shock. More importantly, a miswired board, reversed limit polarity, or incorrect force settings can send a heavy garage door down hard on whatever’s beneath it. Genie’s force controls are software-calibrated on these boards, not mechanical dials. Get it wrong and the safety reverse may not catch in time.

We’re not affiliated with Genie. We’re an independent shop that happens to carry their parts because Shavano Park homeowners keep asking for them. If you’re handy and want to source your own board, we’ll tell you the exact part number. If you want it done right without the weekend lost to troubleshooting, we’re at (830) 224-4217. Quote it flat. Do it right. Move on.
